How To Build A Strong Immune System

The longer you live, the more you realize it’s the habits you develop that make a difference. You won’t get fat occasionally eating a piece of cake or fit walking a few blocks once in a while. Since habits make the difference, develop healthy habits, especially if you want a strong immune system. It’s the things you do each day that affect your immunity and health.

What are you eating?

Are plenty of veggies and whole foods on your plate with a good source of protein, or are your meals mainly carried out in a bag? If you’re a fast food junkie, develop a new habit. Order healthy food off the menu, like salads or protein that are grilled instead of fried. Meal planning is another option. You make the week’s meals ahead, so all you have to do is heat and serve at the end of the day.

Get plenty of sleep.

When you sleep, the T-cells create cytokines, a protein that helps the immune system. The cytokines improve the immune response. Sleep empowers those cells to do their job. Your body also repairs tissues and clears away waste. It takes more than just adequate sleep. It takes quality sleep, too. Create a sleep schedule where you fall asleep and awaken at the same time daily, even on weekends. It helps improve your circadian rhythm. Make sure your room is dark and that you turn off all electronic devices. Leave your cell phone in another room. The room should be on the cool side for the best sleep.

Get more exercise.

Make walking more of a habit. Take time once a day to exercise. If you don’t have time to do it all at once, break it into manageable time sections. Exercise at the same time every day. It’s easier to make it a habit that way. Add it to your schedule as you would any appointment. Exercise improves your gut microbiome, which is considered your second immune system. It increases circulation and the length of the telomeres that protect your chromosomes.

  • Focus on healthier drinks, too. Coffee without cream and sugar, plain green tea with a pit of lemon, and water are better options. Green tea contains catechins that provide antioxidant protection.
  • Vary the colors of vegetables on your plate. Don’t forget to add herbs and spices. One study found that elderberries provided the same protection from H1N1 as Tamiflu.
  • Spend time outside getting sun. The fairer your complexion, the less time you spend without sunscreen, up to a half hour. It’s the easiest way to get vitamin D. Vitamin D boosts immunity.
  • Eat more fiber. Fiber keeps you regular but does so much more. It also feeds your microbiome. The stronger your microbiome, the better your immunity is. Add probiotic food to your diet, too. Yogurt, kefir, and kimchi are a few.
