Healthy Habits For A Balanced Lifestyle

If you live in New York, NY, it’s hard to pass all the bakeries, food vendors, and fast food restaurants without getting something to eat. Temptation is everywhere. Eating a donut or highly processed, loaded hot dog won’t hurt you occasionally, but if you do it every day, it can make it harder to stay fit. Staying healthy is all about the habits you form, not just one run-in with a cream cheese Danish. It’s about your lifestyle, the things you do every day.

Pile your plate with vegetables and eat slower.

Start your meal with a large salad of mixed greens to fill you up without a high-calorie count. Choose a variety of greens, not just iceberg lettuce. Iceberg lettuce has few nutrients compared to other greens. Choose options like baby kale, spinach, and beet greens. You’ll love the nutty flavor of oakleaf lettuce. It has a multitude of vitamins, as do other leaf lettuces. Add other raw vegetables, including sprouts. Broccoli sprouts can boost your immune system. Adding more vegetables to your plate will also fill you up and add extra nutrients without many calories. Eat slowly and chew your food well. It gives your stomach a chance to signal your brain it’s full and aids digestion.

Get more exercise.

If you haven’t started a formal exercise program, do it. Schedule it at the same time every day to make it a habit. Find ways to walk more. Instead of circling the parking lot looking for a parking spot, park further from the store and walk. If you’re riding a bus or the subway, get off one stop earlier and walk the final part of your journey. Use the stairs instead of the elevator.

Create a sleep schedule.

Lack of sleep is a big problem many Americans have. It’s almost a badge of courage. It’s bad for your health and a deterrent to weight loss. Leptin is the hormone that makes you feel full. Ghrelin makes you feel hungry. When you lack sleep, your body produces more ghrelin and less leptin. Lack of sleep negatively affects your heart, memory, and immune system. It increases the risk of diabetes. Create a sleep schedule and stick with it until it becomes a habit.

  • Cut out food with added sugar. Sugar is addictive. The more you eat, the more you want. It’s hard to quit, but once it becomes a habit, you’ll notice how sweet natural foods taste.
  • Mild dehydration can make you feel tired. Don’t reach for coffee or cola as a pick-me-up. Drinking water works well. Drinking water before a meal can help you eat less.
  • Push yourself to walk faster and take longer strides. You can even vary your walking speed, going at peak speed and alternating it with a moderate speed. It turns a walk into a high intensity interval training session.
  • When creating a habit, do the activity consistently for nine weeks. Studies show it takes an average of 66 days to form a habit.
